Ron Padgett, the author of Creative Reading, recalls how he learned to read and write as though these things happened yesterday. Like Padgett, I tried recalling my reading and writing history. When my parents read to me, they enjoyed reading Dr. Suess books, which became popular with the publication of The Cat Learning to read essay The Hat.
I was only interested in looking at books with color. When the books were colorful they grabbed my attention quickly. I couldn’t wait for my parents to come in my room at night and read to me from The Cat in the Hat. I think that this is one of the popular books that parents should read to their children. Every time my parents read to me, I tried to say the words along with them. As a result, anytime I had problems pronouncing a word, my mother made me sound the word out until I sounded it correctly. She told me to take each word, syllable by syllable.
When I grew older, I loved reading The Babysitter’s Club series. Each time I bought a Babysitter’s Club book, it had a section in the back where a girl could sign up to be part of what was known as The Babysitter’s Club. All a girl had to do was fill out the back portion of the book and send it in to a mailing address. It took about three weeks for a package to arrive at my house. It was fun being part of the club because I received three different books, bumper stickers, buttons, pencils, mirrors, and other things I thought were cool every month. They were the only books that existed in my life. I loved reading the series and wondering what the next story would be about.
My school did this to try to prepare the students for the SAT’s. In junior year, when it came time to take the SAT’s, I hated it. After I was always forced to read books that were not exciting I never found myself simply reading for pleasure. When I was younger, I was interested in reading. I loved leisure reading and used to get different books from the library at least once a week. As I have grown older, I read dramatically less and reading is more irritating.
I hate reading and sometimes get annoyed when I have reading assignments in class. Through the years, there were readings that I was forced to read and did not enjoy. It has turned me off from reading for the most part. I know that reading is something that is important, but I also know that it is something that I hate doing most of the time. Get feedback on grammar, clarity, concision and logic instantly. Frederick Douglass is the story of one young man’s pursuit for intelligence, proficiency, and literacy.
This selection describes the challenges Douglass himself faces as he conquers his aspirations to read and write amidst his enslavement. The literary nonfiction forms that I found to be most prevalent throughout the excerpt were a sense of place, and personal experience. Innumerable times throughout Douglass’s essay he refers to specific locations, establishing the setting in which his story takes place. Throughout the WRD 102 class, I have had to write a lot of essays, personal narrative, response paper, evaluative review, and argument essay.
Before this class, I would start to write thinking my teacher is the only one who is going to read it. However, in this class one of the things I have learned is that, in order to write a good paper, you have to choose your audience and write according to what would they argue about. My main problem was the structure of the essay. Even though I have made progress I still think I’m not where I want to be. For a while, it was my nightly bedtime story.
Anyone who offered to read aloud to me was immediately proffered this book. After some time, I knew the story by heart, word for word. I could not quite read the book but I had memorized the framework of it and so could tell the story myself. The day that I learned to finally recognize the words themselves was so exciting. When the blur of squiggly lines on the page became letters with sound and meaning, a whole new dimension opened up. The process of writing is a path which allows the writer to emphasize on reader’s demands, and a way to exemplify different perspectives using the basic conventions in the context.
Three of the most well known composition theorists present their ideas about this procedure in a way that is based on the same principle of how to write well and to pass the message wisely. Linda Flower, professor of Rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University, believes that writing is the result of a highly individualized process. When in the course of human events, something’s are made self-evident, like having to read Hamlet and write about three soliloquies. These soliloquies tend to be very lengthy and have very sub surface meanings to them that require some enabled humanoids to use the frontal cortex of their neurological brains in order to understand these meanings. In other words, they are hard to understand, especially with them being written in the Shakespearean era of influence in the island Kingdoms that are Untied. If they pair up they can converse about the book and ask each other questions if necessary.
