This essay is derived from a keynote how would you like to be remembered essay Xtech. What does it take to make a silicon valley even here?
What it takes is the right people. That’s a striking departure from the past. MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie-Mellon. Stanford and Berkeley yielded Silicon Valley. The record skips at that point.
But what happened in Pittsburgh? Cornell, which is also high on the list? Rich people don’t want to live in Pittsburgh or Ithaca. Do you really need the rich people?
Though indeed, most things bureaucrats do, they do badly. If you go to see Silicon Valley, what you’ll see are buildings. But it’s the people that make it Silicon Valley, not the buildings. Valley were the office space. Don’t the French realize these aren’t startups?
They’ll go where life is good. What nerds like is other nerds. And in particular, to great universities. Actually it might be easy. The university is just the seed. So what do nerds look for in a town? New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.
