There I was, holding onto my suitcase, standing in the airport about to board my plane. I was fifteen years old, going into my sophomore year of high school, and I was going to Italy for ten days with my best friend and a tour group from his school. For months, we had been counting down the days until we leave. The day was finally here and everyone around was full of excitement.
Everyone else had been on planes multiple times in their lives. As for me, I had never been on an airplane before and had no idea what to expect about this upcoming eight hour plane ride. I pray that the sound will just drift away to nothingness and bring back the heavy sounds of the city. I wait patiently in the early morning darkness, which the rain has brought to my window waiting for some kind of sign of a hot New York day. Of all the days to rain, why did it have to be this day.
The one full day I have to spend in New York and get to know the city. In 1845, Frederick Douglass told his compelling story of life as slave and as a free man. Through the words of somebody who endured slavery, we can only get a taste of what it was like, for we will never truly know the feeling of the severe physical punishment and the cruelty the slaves endured. Whippings, beatings and lynchings were all too common during the era of slavery.
However, not only were their bodies treated so harshly, but their minds and souls were as well. Both his command of the language and his insight as a minister gave this paper a unique view of the narrative. We can so easily deceive ourselves into believing that what is accepted by the general population as normal behavior is also justifiably correct. I feel that the event of starting high school was the starting point of what kind of person I was going to become. Not only did I start going to a new kind of school, but I started attending the high school youth group at my church. I also had the privilege to start working on my first car. Without this experience, I feel that I would not be where I am right now.
There’s no other way to describe them. Some people most likely remember the gift giving or receiving. Many memories likely involved family relations-you know, the bickering in-laws, the kids running all over the place, mothers and mothers-in-law with too much advice for the agitated cook. But most catastrophes happened in the kitchen, or were otherwise related to a dinner that was supposed to be special.
We’ve all heard about the inexperienced cooks who tried to roast turkeys that were frozen solid, maybe in time for next Christmas. Frederick Douglass was born in Maryland in 1818 as a slave to a maritime captain, Captain Anthony. After decades of enslavement, Frederick Douglass escaped to the North and became one of the prominent members and drivers of the abolitionist movement. In an effort to provide an eye-opening account of the harsh treatment of slaves, Douglass wrote Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.
